Hehehe… great idea though, now you can save the Iliad in very very short form on your mobile, just in case you forget the main plot during an exam: “Aeneas da Trojan hero woz hit by Diomedes n Aphrodite went 2 help im. Da Gods withdrew. Ares helped da Trojans but Athena helped Diomedes 2 spear im.”
Just a question to all Americans… do you even use the word barny in the US? I thought it was just Cockney rhyming slang ( from “Barney Rubble”, trouble). Or is this just the UK version of Bill’s Iliad? But they’ve left some 'th’s in there so it can’t be Cockney .
Understood. BTW, I saw that J Depp was on the tube (TV) yesterday, but I didn’t have time to watch it or see what it was. I do like him in “Who’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”
Whenever I am privileged with colloquialisms from the Commonwealth, I usually hit up a site such as this one (Dictionary of English slang and colloquialisms of the UK) if it is something that I haven’t already added to my personal dictionary (vs. vocabulary since chances are slim that I would ever use such terms in active speech). I’ve also found this site (The Phurba Etymologicon) to be of use from time to time.
As far as the inconsistencies in the text quoted in the article (“im” and “him” was one I noticed), I hope it’s just due to typos on the part of the transcriber and not actually verbatim in the text messaging version. Nothing like a cackhanded transcription of a cackhanded translation to ruin your day.
Well the translation is already messed up, as I said, there are still some ths aroud that shouldn’t be…
“Da Gods withdrew” should be ‘Da Gods wifdrew’
the tube
I don’t know that tv programme… but if it was an interview I’m sure I’ll see it on one of the many German celebrity mags. My mum always watches those on TV, the only mag I sometimes watch is taff, which is sort of ‘sick, sad world’.
I’m totally not surprised after taking “World History” in school though. A huge 1200-page book (75% is ‘review’, ‘connections’, pictures), and the only mention of Aristophanes:
He was the most important comedic dramatist. He wrote a play about peace.
…Hello, WE’RE IN HIGH SCHOOL? If that’s educational, it makes sense that something for cell phones should be like this
