My sons name is Devon and he would like to know how to say it in Latin.
I know that the ‘v’ is said like a ‘w’, but as for the rest, I have no clue. So how would the Romans have said Devon?
Thanks for your help
Sarah

Hi RedHeadedMamma
An ancient roman would have pronounced “Devon” just as you pronounce “Dewon” in English (with the stress on the first syllable).
Romanus antiquus “Devon” sonuisset ut “Dewon” anglicè sonas.
Latin names for County Devon in the UK: Devonia, Damnoniorum terra, Defonia, Denia, Devenesira, Devenessira, Devenesyra, Devensira, Devomia, Devonensis comitatus, Devonseira, Devoniensis comitatus, Domnania, Domnonia, Dumnonia (Graesse, Benedict & Plechl, Orbis Latinus, 1972). Dumnonia would have been what the Romans called that part of the world when they invaded, and the “v” change to the name for that area came centuries later, I read on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon .
