So I got my copy of logos today in the mail and I’ve previously looked at Atheneze and I’m not sure how to tackle them. Do you start with a dictionary just to get the basic understanding?
The idea of Logos is that the meaning can be figured out from the context and illustrations, but I don’t know how feasible that is if you haven’t got a teacher. Do your best and ask here if need be is my advice. If there’s any material in Spanish I can translate it for you if you want.
Athenaze starts with a reading passage, but all the vocabulary is given below it. I haven’t got the book with me but as I recall it’s about Dicaeopolis and his farm, how it’s small but the work is hard etc etc. Things get more exciting once his oxen put in an appearance.
Athenaze has a reference grammar and vocabulary list at the back which covers everything you’ll need to know to complete the book - I don’t think you’ll need to consult any other dictionary or grammar unless it’s for curiosity’s sake.
I should say of course that the first step is to learn the alphabet and pronunciation if you haven’t already done that
You may wish to get your pronunciation from Athenaze, unless you know a bit about Spanish pronunciation. For example, they pronounce “z” in Spain a bit different from where I grew up.
I’d judge that the first chapter of Athenaze should get you enough information to start Logos. The initial vocabulary and orthography in Logos is taught through pictures, though some, like ἀκούω and ὁρῶ, don’t seem obvious. And I wonder who is going to pick up the Greek question mark from that presentation? (
I just checked my copy of Athenaze to refresh myself on how it starts. It’s pretty good I think in that it gives you all of the vocabulary you need, an intro on the alphabet and pronunciation (though it does say “imitate your teacher”, which doesn’t help the autodidact) and lots of interesting contextual info. I think that if you start working through that and ask questions here in the forum as you go, you can make great progress.
I’m not familiar with Logos so I can’t speak to that.
