Can anyone recommend a Horodotus text for an intermediate level self-learner? I am currently reading the Faenum Publishing editions of Lucian’s Dialogues (of the Gods, of the Heterai, etc) and I rather like the glossaries and grammatical notes on each page.

There’s this, which covers Book 1, and which is probably aimed at your level:

Steadman has issued a whole series of texts at the same level. The notes don’t seem to be entirely reliable in some cases, but I think that overall these editions should be helpful for readers like you.

The Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics (“Yellow and Green”) series includes several of the later books of Herodotus. These are probably a little beyond your level, but they generally provide a wealth of information, and you might want to challenge yourself:

Thanks, Hylander, for the advice, based on which I have ordered the Steadman Book 1. I will also look into the Cambridge books.

I appreciate your help. This is what makes this site so valuable to people like me who are not surrounded by scholars knowledgeable in Greek (though, in a small town some forty-five minutes drive away there is a Greek restaurant. Something tells me they might not be much help).

Also also, he has a beta version of Herodotus Book 7 up as well.

It seems to me that two of the Cambridge commentaries listed by Amazon do not and have never existed! (The ones on book 2 and book 7). Personally, I particularly liked the ones on books 8 and 9 (which I confirm were very real books!).
