Here comes the viking

Hello all!
As a brand new user from Denmark I just wanted to give my thumbs up for this forum; I was very surprised to stumble upon such a community as this for all Greek and Latin lovers. I really had no idea that it existed, and I hope to participate as much as possible!
Oh, and a brief introduction: I’m 23-year-old student of Classical Greek (been at it for 3 years now) at the University of Copenhagen. As you can imagine, there aren’t many students of the Classics in such a small country as Denmark, in fact it’s pretty much been going downhill for all of Scandinavia within the last 30 years. Therefore, it’s very encouraging to find fellow students across borders to inspire to the struggle for the survival of Greek and Latin in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
Anyways, I’m looking forward to share experiences and discuss Antiquity with all of you. And if anyone enjoys wallowing in Homeric linguistics as much as me, please let me know…
Regards!

Χαί?οις, welcome to the textkit forums!

I can definitely second the decline of classics, here in the Netherlands as well. At the University of Amsterdam, we’re lucky to have about 8 new classics students each year (the number is slowly dwindling though), but Latinity students like myself are starting to become a rare occurence: 1 new Latinity student enrolled this year (in the second year there’s two of us). Let’s hope things start to look up soon!

χαῖ?ε!

Feel free to inflict all of your intellectual experiences and meandering disscussions of all things Antique and Classical upon us.

I love the international quality of this forum ;D Of course, that has been one of the delights of studying classics for millenia … after all, before 1700 Latin was the main means of communication with somebody who was from a European country that was not one’s own.

Hi Psammatichos, welcome to the forum, it is really a great community. It seems we have some common interests: Homer, Herodotus, Joyce, Homer. Good to have you around, N.

Thank you all for the warm welcome!
Right now I’ll be going on my christmas vacation (despite of tons of exams at the start of next month…), and I think I’ll celebrate this by a rereading of Book XVIII of the Iliad. But I definitely expect to contribute to the forum a bit more than these few words after the vacation…
εὖ ζῷτε!

That’s too bad that latin and greek are on the decline in Scandinavia. My current universtity boasts 100 majors in Classics and 17 graduate students.

It’s actually my dream to get a job at a Scandinavian university after I get my PhD. it will never happen though.

Welcome!

I’ll be studying abroad in Scotland (from the USA) in about a week, and I look forward to visiting Denmark and someday learning Danish!
