Help with translation

Hey, I’m trying to translate the following sentence (I’ve marked it in red arrows)

Here’s what I got: “And he [Kodrus] learns by himself what is far away”
I have several problems:

  1. what’s the role of τί here? is it the interrogative pronoun?
  2. what’s the role of ἀπέχονται? what is its object?
  3. is the translation of αὐτοῦ as by himself correct?

You may want to give it another shot.

  1. It goes together with διὰ. Yes, it is an interrogative pronoun.
  2. The implied subject of ἀπέχονται (3rd person singular) is the Λακεδαιμόνιοι of the previous sentence.
Notice also how αὐτοῦ depends on ἀπέχονται in the said sentence. This is true for the sentence you are translating now.
  3. No, it is not.

Check also for different meanings of ἀπέχονται under II. Med.

brunapogliano has suggested a good online resource : Check 327 and 328. http://www.ccel.org/s/smyth/grammar/html/smyth_2l_uni.htm#327
