Hello everyone,
I’ve been lurking on the Latin side of textkit for quite some time now, and I learned a few things. So, time to become a member and perhaps try and contribute something…
Wanting to know what is lost in translations: that is my main motive to study Latin. I like to read my literature & philosophy in their original languages (which I can only do well in Dutch, English, French, German), and I have often found myself having to read translations of Latin authors (mainly the classics).
I had four years of Latin in school. That was more than forty years ago… Semi-retirement has given me the time to re-learn Latin, and – surprise – I’m using the Orberg-style books (but also my old grammar book from school). I guess I’m somewhat of a Latin-learning cliché: grammar-translation method in school, LLSPI later in life. Currently I’m on the “intermediate plateau”, as it seems to be called. I don’t feel “stuck”, though – I’m happy to be there and determined to go forward.
Best,
JeanW
