Hello from Chicago, IL (U.S.A.)

Hello! I am excited to join this forum and look forward to interacting with members.

I am currently teaching myself Latin from Susan C. Shelmerdine’s text Introduction to Latin, which I bought earlier this year on recommendation. Now, I wish I had chosen Wheelock’s book instead since I find Shelmerdine a little too concise, but I’m forging ahead. Before a few months ago, I had never learned Latin although I had always wanted to. I studied French in secondary school, and I am fluent in Spanish, so I know I have a bit of an advantage in learning Latin, which is why I even considered teaching myself. So far, it’s going great, if slowly, and I am enjoying learning not just the language but also a little bit of ancient history and culture. However, I have questions, which is why I joined Textkit. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the forum, Elena!

Hello, I am new too. The evening Latin course I took a few years ago used Shelmerdine’s Introduction to Latin. I thought it was quite good, and it has a lot of interesting Latin passages to translate. It’s probably more suitable for learning as part of a class though where there is a teacher to explain things in more detail and answer questions. I also found the nominative, genitive, dative… case order quite confusing, having already started learning the declensions nominative, vocative, accusative…
