I’m interested in the phenomenon whereby certain Greek words come to possess multiple, often divergent, meanings. For instance, why does euphemia mean “ritual silence”, auspicious words, but also praise (of living, honourable men)? Pharmakon is another one of these words with many meanings that I find intriguing. I imagine there are specific historical reasons why different Greek words come to mean different things, and to encompass different value spheres, but I’m curious if there’s a good discussion of this linguistic phenomenon that I could read.
Many thanks!
