Galen De usu partium 4.162.11 K

Hello dear friends,

Can you please help me understanding the meaning of the particle τι in the following sentence:

ἔδει γὰρ εἶναί τι καὶ θῆλυ.

I would translate like this: “It was necessary that a woman also exists”; but this would be without the τι.

Thanks in advance.

For it was necessary that it should exist something feminine too.

“For there had to be (or there should have been) something female too.”

The τι is not actually a particle but the indefinite pronoun, neuter singular, here accusative.

Thank you, I know it’s not a particle, I made a mistake when I was writing.

Thanks a lot for your help.
