While reading one of those many stories about what the Spartans said (usually in a few words)while visiting Athens and remarking on the laxity of athenian morals I thought how much rthe ancient Spartans must have been like Yorshiremen of the time.Dour,tightlipped,resilient.

One can almost see them sitting on round the mess grumbling in like manner
“When I were a kid we only had a tiny crust of bread and broth a day…but we were happy.” "YOU were lucky…"etc etc.
Might be a cute sketch for a classics department revue.

It kind of reminds me of my granny and grandpa sometimes… But I guess they did have some really bad time in the past.
