The “Thessalonicensis” is important. There are several authors named Eustathius in the TLG.

Thanks, Joel. I did indeed select the correct Eustathius, but I only see:

Epitaphius in Nicolaum Hagiotheodoritam metropolitam Atheniensem

and

Exegesis in canonem iambicum

For the Dolicha item (which you have completely misunderstood) it’s not Eustathius that should be cited but Strabo.

I don’t doubt it, but fortunately I have the Strabo translation already so I can look there. Even if he is quoting Strabo I’ll still give it its own listing just not reproduce the content.

Are there paid services to have these translations done? Any recommendations?

At the risk of further embarrassing myself, I really think I have this one:

Commentarii ad Homeri Iliadem et Odysseam I. 484, 17:

Χαλκις δὲ ἦ μεν καὶ ἐν Εὐβοία, ὡς προεδηλώθη, καὶ ἀλλαχοῦ
δὲ πολλαχοῦ· ἡ δὲ παρουσα Αἰτωλικὴ ἐστι. ῥέει δὲ ὁ Ἀχελῷος ἐκεῖσε

Also Chalcis in Euboia, evidently, and elsewhere in many places.
Nearby is Aetolia. The river Achelous is there.

I believe if I have made a mistake it concerns “ὡς προεδηλώθη” as “evidently.”

Thanks for all the help and patience and to reiterate–if someone is interested in translating all the Eustathius passages either through collaboration on the larger project or for a fee, please PM (and moderators, if this request is against the rules I apologize).

EDIT: I have found this service: http://langbridge.com/translation.htm, but I’d much rather pay a grad student or interested scholar directly.

The only hit I get for Δολίχα in my document for Strabo is:

Do you know offhand which passage Eustathius is quoting?

In the note on Chalcis I’m afraid you have misunderstood not only ὡς προεδηλώθη (which means “as was shown above”) but also and more importantly the reference to Aetolian Chalcis, a different city altogether.

As to the note on Dolicha, you seem to have unknowingly identified the referenced Strabo testimony, which is that Dolicha (not a river!) lies at the mouth of the Acheloos. Eustathius refers to Strabo as ὁ γεωγράφος.

Perhaps Joel might be willing to help you with the translations, as he did earlier. He makes mistakes (who doesn’t?) but nothing like so many! :smiley:

Thanks for the help. I can’t wait to see what all these actually say. I’m sure there’s nothing groundbreaking but as an Acheloios enthusiast I’m just dying to know!

I’m happy jumping in when it seems fun, here on the boards, but I’m afraid that I’m not about to contribute to something that would see print. I am a long way from being where I would hope to be in Greek.

(Speaking of everyone making mistakes, I want to recommend the Random Greek Passages thread. It would be an exciting board if we had a few of the more fluent folks dropping into that from time to time.)
