Dreaming in a foreign language.

I almost forgot this. But the smell of a cup of coffee I just got from a vending machine (yeah, I’m a caffeine dope) got the dream resurface:

I met a few members of textkit(alas, I cannot remember who were there) and, with them, was discussing about the pronunciation of Ancient Greek last night(or was it a few days ago?). And I was discussing it in English.
I have a very limited experience of talking in English actually. This was odd.

Have anyone dreamt in a foreign laguage you don’t use very often?

I dream in Japanese occasionally…but it’s part of my daily life. What’s even more strange is when I have bilingual dreams, where one person in the dream will speak in English, the other in Japanese, and the other in Korean. It just gets crazy.

Interesting topic!

I’m a native English speaker, but I have caught myself dreaming in German several times. I don’t speak German on a daily basis, but I have studied it for many years.

Latin has entered my dreams as well, but only during the semester I took a course. I woke myself up mumbling the various declensions, so maybe it was a nightmare?? :open_mouth:

Haha, you sound as if you’re ready to compile one of those lists, “you know you’re using Textkit too much when…”

Wow, that’s a good idea. Why don’t you begin a new topic with it?

I’ve once had a dream which had a full series of conversations in German, Italian, French, Latin, and Sanskrit. There was a little Hindi too, but only a couple words, and a little Gaelic too thereafter (in the dream, I was talking to Indian friends of mine about the comparative grammar of Gaelic and Hindi, but yet was describing it in German … pretty crazy).

As I’m bilingual my dreams are sometimes a bit mixed up when it comes to the languages anyway, but I have dreamed in Latin and Greek and French before… but not really much. Just strange sort of dreams where some guy will just walk up and start talking in Greek (ignoring all grammer and vocab, because I couldn’t construct a sentence in Greek while awake, so how could I in my dreams? :stuck_out_tongue: ) or reciting parts of the Odyssey I know off by heart (but when they do that for some reason my dream self knows what they mean anyway, so whichever vers they recite I’ll hand them the broom/coke/cup/whatever  . Lol… and apparently when I was 12 I taked Latin in my sleep. I don’t remember that, but my mum said I did (we were all sleeping in one room at that time).
Uh… yes, I’m strange

I’ve had a Roman dream in which I am part of a legion marching in mountains nearby, it was silent but there were Latin subtitles. That was odd.
I’ve never dreamt in French, a few brief German war dreams that everyone has.

Do you also dream in COLOR?

Latin subtitles! How strange… were you watching a subtitled film before you went to sleep that night or what?

No it was random, and mariek that was cheap! (I’m not writing cheap in coloUr)

War dreams are the best, they are vivid but you don’t die at the end thankfully.

I dream in colour AND I can read in my dreams… both of which I’ve been told are impossible… but obviously not since they are both regular occurrences for me.

But I can’t say I’ve ever had a german war dream… lol.

And I can never seem to talk on the phone in my dreams… it starts out ok and then there is always just complete silence…

All of my dreams are in colour, that goes without saying. And reading is very much possible for me too.

I have read Indonesian books in my dreams, but never Greek or Latin, alas.
