The Predicate Nominative can be an Infinitive or a Noun or an Adverb.
In the following Sentence, “The Boy ran fast,” is ‘fast’ the Predicate Nominative?
What about such a Sentence such as, “The Boy ran.” I doubt that a conjugated Verb such as ‘ran’ could be considered a Predicate Nominative.
It can be an adverb? I think of the predicate nominative as being a predicate that renames the subject of the sentence, often with a linking verb. I never heard that it could be an adverb. But certainly, either way, not all sentences have a predicate nominative; I would guess that the overwhelming majority do not.
fast is a “adjectival predicative of the subject” and not a “nominal predicative of the subject”. To my knowledge it is correct to say that a “predicate nominative” renames the subject of a sentence.
Literally? Look at the Sentence, “The boy ran down the Road.” ‘Road’ is the Predicate Nominative. Does ‘Road’ literally represent another concept such as ‘Boy’ or ‘Running’ or do you just accept that it is a Noun in the Predicate?
I do not believe the road is in nominative. It is simply part of the predicate. A predicate in the nominative would be “Tom is a boy” or “the worker in blue is Steve”. tom=boy worker=steve
Wikipedia says:
The predicative is an element of the predicate of a sentence which supplements the subject or object by means of the verb. Predicative may be nominal or adjectival. A predicate nominative is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames the subject.
He seems nice. (adjectival predicative of the subject)
Bob is a postman. (nominal predicative of the subject)
We painted the door white. (adjectival predicative of the object)
They elected him president. (nominal predicative of the object
Notice “re-names”, I believe nominative mostly mean the “subject” of the sentence. The “road” in your sentence is not the subject and is not doing the running. It is accusative and I think in English it is called predicative object. To bad English is not inflected anymore, it would make this all so much simpler.
Text y’a later.
Your are totally correct, fast is clearly an adverb. And I never claimed it was a “predicate nominative”, if fact I said
not a “nominal predicative of the subject”.
and so I too agree that only linking type verbs can “support sentences having predicate nominatives”. You can blame that post on extremes in time and for some reason I was thinking it said the THE BOY IS FAST. I guess next time I should read what I paste!
