Hello everyone,
I am working on a topic in Greek tragedy right now and attempting to find the original Greek text (and maybe translation) of the Athenian victory lists and the so-called Parian marble. Both of these inscriptions contain important historical information about the plays that were produced in the dramatic contests at Athens.
I looked through Osborne and Rhodes’ collection of inscriptions but can’t seem to find either of them there.
I would be grateful to know where I can find critical editions of these inscriptions.
Many thanks!
I would suggest starting with Pickard-Cambridge, The Dramatic Festivals of Athens (2nd ed., revised by John Gould and D.M. Lewis).
At the end of the second chapter on the City Dionysia, P.-C. provides an appendix containing all the relevant inscriptions
bearing on the Dionysia and Lenaia, with introductions and notes where necessary, and concludes with a summary of the main chronological conclusions
.
No translations, though. I don’t think one is needed if you have some Greek: the inscriptions follow a standard formula and are thus very repetitive. That said, if you don’t have Greek but some basic Italian, the Italian translation (Le feste drammatiche di Atene Firenze, 1996) also provides translations for every Greek passage cited in the book (the resulting tome is more than 150 pages longer than the English original).
The critical editions would be Inscriptiones Graecae. Information on volume/edition/text number can be found in P.-C.
Thanks very much! Super helpful!
