Hello, I have just begun to learn Latin. I am looking for clarification on the correct translation for “be not afraid”, or “do not be afraid” in the singular form to a male. As if I am speaking to my son.
Is it “Noli Timere” or , “Nolite Timere” ? However in my dictionary I also see that "metus " is the term for fear? so would it be “Noli Metus”? Thank you.
“Metus” is a fourth-declension noun; it’s related to the third-conjugation verb “metuere” but “timere” is probably the word you’re asking for (from your question I’m not sure you’ve learned that conjugation or declension yet). “Noli” is the singular imperative, “nolite” the plural. It’s actually the imperative of “nolle”, “to not wish”. “Do not want to fear!” is the literal translation.
Thank you for your response. That is a little advanced for me at this point. If I am understanding this correctly then “Noli Timere” is the singular form translation, speaking to a male for “Be not afraid”.
