Classics programs

Does anyone know where I can find a ranking of the undergraduate classics programs in the US? So far I have looked at Case Western, Oberlin, College of the Holy Cross, Kenyon College, and Northwestern Because I have heard that they have good programs.

Hi…

I don’t know about specific rankings, but I will tell you that the University of Kansas and Kentucky have top notch Classics programs. I haven’t attended either, but I considered going to the Univ of KS and found it to be rigorous and respectable.

Hope this helps a touch,
Chris

Also is University of Cincinnati- an excellent program. Where they differ too is that they have also a Masters program as well.

For classics undergrads, they have very generous scholarships. I’m not certain exactly what but I think there are many full scholarship opportunities available.

I’m not familiar with any specific rankings. I assume you are interested because you are looking at colleges for yourself. Try looking at Peterson’s guide, or some such book, they should list most of the US colleges and tell you which ones include a classics department. While it is always fun to say ‘my department is better than your department’, rankings really don’t mean a whole lot. Look at quality schools you think you would be happy at and make sure they include the programs you want. If possible, you could even try contacting (better yet, visiting) the school and the department and determine for yourself if the department seems well-funded or shoved into the basement of the english building.
I went to NYU which has both undergrad and grad greek/latin studies (I wasn’t in the classics program, so I can’t really speak for its quality). They also have some new “institute for ancient study” that seems promising (though it is specifically for graduate studies)

Oberlin and Northwestern are both excellent and well-respected schools. I’m afraid I’m not familiar with the other ones.
