Over the last few months I have, as is my wont, being buying more classics books. Since I posted the last list I have had some interesting comments on some of the items therein (albeit primarily by the list’s being picked up on google), and I thought the much updated version of the collection might be of interest to some, however few. Cheers.

Unlike yourself I have few book on composition and grammar but have texts of several Greek and Latin authors you don’t include . Also I have quite a few more books on Greek and Roman religion and antiquities . I also have a lot of medieval latin .My own collection is rather haphazard whereas yours seems very much more focussed .

That’s interesting to hear Phil. My interests have not yet spread to Christian and Medieval Latin or Koine Greek. I would be interested to know what texts you think I am missing before, say, A.D. 100 in Latin, and what texts of literary import I am missing from before 350 B.C. in Greek. Some names do spring to mind, but not many I do not think.
Yes, my specific interests lie with the languages, so books and collections of composition are especially sought after by me. You will have noted, no doubt, the paucity of historical and archaeological books, two fields which though very large and very important i have little interest in!
Many thanks,

~D

I am glad to hear whiteoctave that your interests lie mainly in language, as I would have to agree with you there.

I am also very curious to know how on earth you acquire such paper to purchase all of these books! :open_mouth:

btw his name is clearly Phil

Yes , you are right. I think the unlisted texts I have are mostly outside the dates you specify .(e.g. Lucian ,Apulieus, Marcus Aurelius etc) or are of historical interest rather than literary value (e.g. Polybius , Pausanius , Appian , Suetonius , Valerius , Nepos etc,)
I couldnt find Hesiod or Theognis listed in your texts nor the Homeric hymns , Petronius or the Plinys . I missed Quintillian too.
BTW As you see I am new here and very glad to find this forum which is a great opportunity to discuss the books I get so much pleasure from .So I thought ,why not jump straight in with a friendly discussion - no pushiness was intended .

Indeed, I lack almost all second sophistic Greek and the historical prose of Latin found with Nepos and Suet., from which, I must confess, I draw little excitement. Cicero and Sallust, both writers of historical interest, reached the perfection of two wholly antithetical literary prose styles, and it is primarily from the skill of their means of expression, (and so, to a lesser extent, Livy can be entertaining) that I draw interest. I have my on the OCT Hesiod of Solmsen (and West), and understand the painful gap that it is causing. As for Theognis, the whole of the Theognidea is printed with an apparatus criticus in the Iambi et Elegi Graeci.
What are your specific interests in Classics?

~D

I have to admit that my interests are perhaps more ‘antiquarian’ than strictly ‘classicist’ , I enjoy medieval Latin especially reading in my volumes of Migne’s ‘Patrologia Latina’.
You mention Cicero ,I prefer his philosophical treatises especially ‘de Natura Deorum’ , 'de Divinatione 'etc rather than his letters and speeches as I have less interest in the politics of the time .
Likewise with Livy I prefer the earlier books which are tinged with myth and the origins of Roman religion . I am fascinated by the history of religion hence Valerius Maximus and Dionysius Halicarnassus .In Greek I also like reading the Septuagint and Josephus as well as Diodorus Siculus and Plutarch so if I had to be specific I would say it is the ‘romance’ and strangeness of antiquity ,the shadowy world of the late pagan and early Christian era that fascinates me and this naturally leads into later Latin and Greek writings , lives of saints , theological allegory and mysticism of monastic and Byzantine writers .
2 books spring to mind which perhaps sum up my interests , for the earlier period Gilbert Murray’s ‘four stages of Greek religion’ for the later Helen Waddell’s ‘the Wandering Scholars’ .
Hope this makes sense I never tried to summarise these interests before .

What? No Griffin “Homer on Life and Death”?

because i don’t ‘do’ balliol.

hah, no, i’ve read a large portion of it in college library, and it is indeed a seminal work, but i tend not to have the cash to buy new books or recent second hand editions, and whene’er i do come by such funds they are spent upon texts, commentaries and linguistic affairs before their lit crit counterparts.

So what are your specialities then? Philology?

i wouldn’t really like to claim a speciality in anything for some decades to come, but my especial interests, i should say, are in textual theory (i.e. emendation/transmission), ancient and comparative philology, epicurean philosophy (along with platonism); my main love is composition and translation, which is handy for all the above. i have recently found a strong interest in classical history, that is, the history of (particularly victorian and edwardian) classical scholarship, rather than greco-roman history.
and yourself?
