i haven’t been in here for a very long time now, but i’m back. i have been interested in learning greek for some time now, but i’m having problems keeping track of the terminology : nom, acc, dat,voc, etc. anyone have any ideas?
also, other than mounce, what is a good book to use for learning greek? i currently have dobson, duff, and another one i can’t remember.
Welcome back. Don’t cut corners on the basics. You need to learn the cases. I’d learn Attic Greek first and then biblical Greek will be a breeze. I used Reading Greek of the Joint Association of Classical Teachers. It comes with an independent study guide.
bedware is entirely correct that if you learn Attic Greek first then Koine Greek will be a breeze, but if you’re already having problems learning Koine, then trying to parse the more difficult Attic texts may be too discouraging. Do what you need to do to be able to continue, and if that’s taking small bites, then by all means do that.
He’s absolutely right, though, that you do need to learn the cases. Of the basic texts you mention I’ve only read Mounce, but don’t be afraid of working through one, and then starting over with another. This will reinforce what you already learned and allow you to focus on some stuff that gave you problems the first time out.
