Salvete,
Even though I have successfully completed a couple of beginner grammars, it is still difficult for me to translate most of the Latin I encounter. When I do find that rare phrase that I understand without a dictionary, I’m eager to share it. Here’s one from the blog “Laudator Temporis Acti” (Praiser of Times Past):
“numquam volui populo placere; nam quae ego scio non probat populus, quae probat populus ego nescio.”
– Seneca, Letters to Lucilius 29.10
My translation: “I never wanted to please the people; for that which I know is not approved by the people, that which the people approve I do not know.”
Rusticus
