Basic Greek Vocabulary

I have written a program to drill students on the 1500-word Basic Greek Vocabulary list. It includes sound and pictures for each word, and so-far has about 880 of the 1500 words intended. I have designed to program to drill in progressively harder stages until the words are part of your active vocabulary.

Anyway, I need beta testers. Anyone interested? Find me a place to upload the program where others can download it and install it, and I will provide it to everyone here who wants to try it.

The files, with setup program, is about 560 megabites. I am sure you will find it interesting. The vocabulary is currently ordered an Luschnig’s Reading Greek, but when finished will offer a number of choices in order.

That sounds good.

Try this site to upload your files: http://www.rapidshare.de/

You have to split your file in 100mb-packages.

Sure thing. Would love to test it. I considered making something like that myself.

Actually, I was wanting some kind of vocab to study over the summer. Good Idea!

Count me in! I need some hardcore vocab training…

Oh, and for uploading pruposes, try making a TORRENT out of it?

http://www.bittorrent.com/

After we download it we can all just seed it and make life Greekier for many.

I’d be glad to help beta test it! I don’t know how to use torrent software though.

great idea! I’d love to try it.

I agree that a torrent would be a good way to share it.

I have spent the last 24 hours on Rapidshare, but the uploads are slow.
I have set the directory up on BitTorrent and called it Greek. You will need everything in the directory and subdirectory. When it is all downloaded, run setup and it will self-install. There are 880 words and pictures in the database. Every word is pronounced and fully accented.

The program has 10 levels; so if you select a 10-word lesson, for example, you will see the words 10 times each (once on each level). So, a ten-word lesson has one hundred frames (10 levels of 10 frames each). The first five levels have you type in English. The second five have you type in Greek. When typing in Greek you can select “AutoAccents” go, or you can, Shift for accents and Cntrl for rough breathings. w = final sigma; v = omega; j = ksi; etc. Most letters are mapped to the English equivalent. (It is all very easy to use.)

Let me know what you think of it.

By the way, even though I have set it up via BitTorrent, I am not entirely clear how it works. I guess my computer will act as a server; is that it?

Yeah that’s how it works I believe. The more of us that download it and SEED it, the less strain there will be on you alone…Do you have a link by the by?

This all sounds very slow and painful to me. Anyone who is in a hurry can e-mail me with a physical address and I will send you a self-installing disk immediately. I can’t wait too long to get famous because I am 64 years old and might die some day.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but…
Well, I give up. I tried everything, but I can’t publish my program. I even purchased my own website and tried to FTP it to that site. It is just too big (650 meg).

I have decided to create a “demo version” that I can publish: maybe 200 words with sounds and pictures. I will publish that address as soon as I get it ready (perhaps a week).

In the mean time, please take me up on my offer to send you a CD. I will be happy to send out as many as it takes to get this thing beta-tested.

My program is available! It has been uploaded to a website and can be downloaded in two zip files. The website is: fenceguyinc.com, and the files are prominantly displayed as Attic Greek1zip and Attic Greek2.zip

Once these files have been downloaded, you can unzip them in to the same directory and run setup.exe You will then have all of the nouns of the 1500 word list to examine and learn as you please.

The other 900 words will be uploaded soon to the same website (300 adjectives, 500 verbs, and 100 function words).

I think you will enjoy this program.

I have a question:
The program doesn’t display the accented words. How do I get that to work? and also How do I access the entire word list?

to display the accented letters, you must reboot your computer after installation to let the font register.

There is no feature to display the the entire list of words, but I can e-mail you the list.

I need to know which version of the program you have. Did you download it from fenceguyinc.com or did I send you a disc?
