When can i use quam?
What comes after it?
well quam can be used in a variety of ways.
relative pronoun
illa est femina quam amo - she [that woman] is the woman whom i love
used with comparatives
ille fortior est quam hic - that man is stronger than this one.
used with superlatives
illa quam pulcherrima est - that woman is as beautiful as possible… i don’t think she could get any more beautiful.
I’m not sure how to explain this use. interrogative? exclamatory?
quam triste? - how sad?
quam triste! - how sad!
wait for a more learned person to confirm /dash to pieces/ all this

If I get anything wrong please let me know.
Quam can be used in a variety of ways. It depending on context can mean who, what, which, how much or how many. In this respect it resembles Ille/is and hic. All depending on use. You brought up an interesting question that I would like to know if anyone knows the answer to.
Given the similatiry of questions asked by the following.
Quot how many?
Quis Quia Quid who what Which?
Qualis what kind?
Quam how?
Quare why?
am I right in assuming that for a great many words that qu asks a question involving kind type and quality?
How did this evolve?
thanks for your replies and am waiting for the more
I’m not sure what you mean. How is a “why” question a question of type and quality?
