Ξανθίας

οἴμοι κακοδαίμων: τί γὰρ ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐναυμάχουν;
ἦ τἄν σε κωκύειν ἂν ἐκέλευον μακρά.

I’m struggling with the line in bold. My translation so far is: “In truth (ἡ), I’d be making you wail at length”, but I don’t understand two things:

  1. what is τἀν? I took it as τε + ἀν, but (if this is the case) I don’t understand why why there are two ἀν in the sentence?
  2. because of the presence of ἀν (specifically the second ἀν with ἐκελευον) I thought this sentence was some time of conditional clause - is this correct? (the sense being: ‘in truth (if I was fighting at sea right now) I’d be making you…’)

Thanks in advance!

  1. τἄν is τοι ἄν.
  2. It is an unreal conditional with unexpressed protasis “If I had” and the apodosis with ἄν + aorist or imperfect indicative. (If I had … then I would … [but it never happened]).
