Adler's Course

For those who have completed or at least have gotten a majority way through the course, I wanted to know your opinion. I got through like 18 lessons or so at one point but quit for a multitude of reasons. It’s not that I believe it would have been useless, but it was kind of boring and I felt there were better uses of my time.

For any that have finished it, how much did it actually improve your Latin, whether spoken, reading, or writing. If so, did you feel your time could have been better spent on some other course, book, etc.?

I would be surprised if anyone has finished it. I don’t really understand why this book is used at all. Maybe it’s just because it has been promoted so much by metrodorus. I personally think there are far better and shorter textbooks available for free.

Adler is a complete 191 hour Latin course, based on the textbook by George Adler “A Practical Grammar of the Latin Language”. The audio course modernises the textbook, and provides extensive exercises and oral expositions of Latin grammar. Prendergast’s Latin Mastery Course, for more advanced students, is also provided with the first 50 exercises public access.

Dear Ursinus,
About six years ago I completed the entire Adler Course. It took about a year and was well worth it. You can read about my experience, if you like: http://latinandgreekselftaught.blogspot.com/2011/05/.

You wrote “it was kind of boring.” Why is that, do you think? Perhaps you’re past the grammar-book stage of learning and should really be reading some good intermediate texts? I was doing Adler and Ørberg concurrently, and perhaps mitigated against boredom. But I had resolved to spend a year really building a sound foundation, and I was thrilled with my incremental progress in comprehension and orality as I moved through the Adler. So, to be honest, in my own experience I can’t identify with the “kind of boring.”
