YouTube Lectures

Hi all!

Does anyone know any interesting lectures that are up on Youtube about Greek philosophy, literature etc. and that assume some knowledge of Greek (or at least, aren’t afraid to use Greek)? A long the lines of the undergrad lectures that find they way online for most subjects.

Apart from some old (and really interesting ones) from the 90s with Dr Joseph Hughes, a lot of the stuff I seem to find is the same old same old about the Peloponnesian War and Athenian Democracy etc. or just short ‘factoid’ type videos.

I’d be more specific about what I am looking for, though frankly I’ll take what ever is out there!

Thanks!

The Center for Hellenic Studies has absolutely loads of videos, about half of which seem to be Gregory Nagy holding forth from the comfort of his settee (no bad thing). The videos are on all kinds of things, but they do get into the meat of the Greek from the bits I’ve seen.

That looks great, thanks Sean.

And quite right - a settee was good enough for Socrates in the Symposium, it’s good enough for the rest of us.

So good that I’ve spent 12 months straight sitting on it. Hagia sofa.

; )

I admit, I laughed (and have stolen the joke)!

I recommend Randy Gibbons’ videos on the works of Hippocrates and the presocratic corpus.
They’re based directly on the Greek text, are extremely thorough and deal with interesting writings that have much less public exposure than your standard Homer, Herodotus, Plato etc. I have found them to be a great way of getting exposure to Greek when I’m not studying it directly.

Thanks, Elaxer, they look great!
