write it out by hand

For me, it’s most helpful to write out by hand a difficult sentence.

This works in Latin or Greek, especially after I have looked at the translation, and still don’t see how the parts of the sentence fit together. My difficulty, I reckon, is that my English-trained mind fails to see some possibility allowed by a highly inflected language.

But somehow, writing it out in longhand helps.

I believe it works whether I type on the screen, or write on paper, even though most often I write on paper.

It may be that writing affords time for the mind to see relationships.

Hugh, I do exactly the same thing. I buy 12-packs of glue-top scratch pads (50 sheets each) for that purpose.

Has to be glue-top, not the evidence pads, so I can throw the sheet away immediately after use.

Hi Hugh,

I do this for all my Latin and Greek and it helps immensely. It seems to stick in my mind better when I do it by hand into my workbooks for each subject.

Cheers.

writing out helps me, typing on the screen doesn’t.
