what is the “definitive” edition of the vulgate? through my very preliminary research, it looks like there’s a vulgate and then there’s a “neo-vulgate” which is only loosely based on Jerome’s work. i’m looking for a good scholarly edition that would provide an enjoyable/satisfying read.
This version is the current definitive edition. It’s Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft’s Biblia Sacra Vulgata version 4. Just recently version 5 came out with an updated apparatus criticus, but as far as I know, the text is still the same.
Here’s mine; I really like it. It has Greek on one page and the exact same verses on the facing page in Latin. Nice size, high-quality thin paper, small but clear text.
Novum Testamentum Graece Et Latine - Greek/Latin New Testament (Leather Bound) by K. Aland
Let’s see, my copy of the Biblia Sacra is “iuxta vulgatam Clementinam, divisionibus, summariis et concordantiis ornata”, printed in Belgium 1956, “typis societatis S. Joannis Evang.”.
No Greek. It’s the vulgate, y’know.
Btw, is there a relatively “pure” text of St. Jerome’s version ? I imagine the text we have now has gone through more than a few recensions.
