Which university to study master degree in Latin Poetry?

Hello, Next year I will graduate from latin literature and I’m planning to study master degree in Latin Literature. I have interest mostly for latin poetry, especially for Ovidius. And I would like to study for my master thesis about Ovidius. I mostly look for universities in Germany, but I’m open to all advice. I started to learn German to study master, and I finished b2 level in two years.

It’s practically impossible to advise on this, because there are too many variables. The main question you should consider is “What do I want to do with this degree?” Is it going to be terminal and you plan to teach somewhere, or do you plan on pursuing a Ph.D. afterward, and perhaps teach at the university level? There are universities whose departments have specialized products designed specifically for teachers at the secondary level (the Ohio State University used to be one such). If you are interested in specializing in Ovid, are there particular professors you know of with whom you could study? Of course, your current professors who are active in the field are the best to advise you. And good luck as you move forward on this!

Here you can find links to department websites for further information: course structure (coursework to thesis ratio, courses available), academics and their interests/supervision availability (you’ll be able to find someone interested in Augustan poetry for sure!), course fees (non UK/EU students, for example, are expected to pay £18000+ in course fees annually in the UK, while Italy averages around 2500 EU per year), expected living costs for the academic year, protocol for international students, entry requirements (usually a first- or upper second-class Honours or equivalent), scholarships and funding, etc. etc.

If you find a department you like in particular or an academic you’d be interested in working with, send them an email directly or, where possible, contact inquiries/secretary/help desk and so forth.

I believe Germany is very much like Italy (where I study), which is to say the masters course is very much coursework oriented: you commence with full-time coursework for the first year and then present a project to an academic for the second year. Then, you juggle a reduced coursework workload whilst working on your thesis. But all this you can find out for yourself from respective departments.

Good luck!

Best course would perhaps be to find out at which German university interesting work on Ovid is in progress, and enquire whether they would welcome you as a student.
