I am an older self learner working with Latin to GCSE 1 by Cullen and Taylor.
I had a question about a sentence where the answer key implies there is a genitive somewhere, but I don’t see it. Can anyone help me here or is this an error? I appreciate your time!
ex horto cum amicis ambulatis.
I translated as:
you(pl) walk from the garden with friends.
the answer key said:
you(pl) are walking out of the garden with YOUR friends.
i read cum amicis as ablative plural and don’t see any genitive.
Is this just an implied stylistic interpretation of the possesive friends or did I miss a clue?
The possessive in “your friends” is implied by the second person in the verb “ambulatis“ as opposed to someone else’s friends which if intended could have been specifically indicated. Of course your translation is not wrong on this count. The intended meaning should always be clear from the context.
You should watch however the difference between ab “from” and ex “out of”. Going from the garden to my house is not the same as going out of the garden.
