I thought I’d start a thread that listed hobbies and passions, just to see what a bunch of cerebral textkittens do for fun, and what they do because they cannot see doing otherwise?
For me, hobbies include…fishing. I love to fish for anything, even if I don’t catch a darn thing. I have a small boat and I love being on the water. I love to read, but I would guess that isn’t unique in this forum at all. Right now I love a good cigar, but I will be quitting again soon, this time for good. I am obviously pretty passionate about my marriage. I married the perfect woman for me, and I still can’t get enough of her after 14 years of marriage.
Spiritually speaking, I am passionate about the Bible, learning it more and applying it to my life. One of my biggest passions is my ministry though. I am passionate about helping drug addicts and alcoholics achieve freedom from drugs and alcohol and experience life in it’s fullness as I have myself.
So…how about y’all? What are you passionate about?
I am very much interested in Free Software. I enjoy using, testing, and occasionally writing software which is free (as in beer). I am also a radio amateur, which is quite fun.
I enjoy language stuff quite a bit, and I am also really interested in the area of Christian ethics.
I love to run… not just for the running itself but for the challenges that I can take on and conquer. So far this season I’ve done one road marathon, one mountain marathon, and one ultra-marathon (50k). The mountain marathon was by far the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life… and I am left with only one conclusion–that I must do it again next year and better my time.
I love being able to say, “wow, if I can do that, then I can…”
I’d like to do a 50 miler next year… we’ll see if I have time to train for it!
As for me I like mathematics. I like it very much, even very-very much. Math is my profession (in future ).
I also like music. Music of second half of 20th century, especially I like Pink Floyd. I am not only listening to music I also play it.
Besides, I like what Kopio is doing. I am also learning Bible.
Reading, Computer Games (Role-playing and strategy in particular (anyone ever play Rome-Total War or its mod Europa Barbarorum? The soldiers yell out Greek and Latin commands in the latter; it is pretty cool)), and though I haven’t done it for a while, Juggling.
The Bible is a major part of who I am so it also must be included but it gets its own paragraph. As a theological/philosophical issue that is becoming very interesting to me, though I haven’t do much studying in it, is God and Beauty, how God is beautiful, how things that are beautiful show God. Generally speaking, beauty has been forgotten about in Protestant culture and it is sad. And from how much I am writing on this, it is obvious that I am passionate about it
This question is a little difficult for me, since the ever-present danger to my Greek studies is that I’m interested in almost everything. I need to take care to focus my attention. I’ve said it before — Textkit has helped to keep my language attention on Greek.
Music is a constant. I’m not quite sure I’d call it a passion, but the time and moolah I spend on it would probably make most people consider it a passion of mine. My tastes run all over, from lute songs to obnoxious industrial, from country to techno. These days I’ve been adding reggaeton and bhangra to my collection, if you can imagine such a combination — Sukshinder Shinda is blasting as I write this. The mere presence of my iPod can stun the unwary.
By the same measure food and cooking are passions. I’m always happy to try something new and interesting. I’m more interested in good than fancy, but I’ve been known to indulge in the latter.
In terms of things that’ll get me really worked up, I have a passionate commitment to the Enlightenment and Enlightenment values — freedom from arbitrary aristocratic and clerical institutions, freedom of conscience, free inquiry and a respect for reason. I spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about post-modern lunacies in particular, but all anti-Enlightenment projects make me excitable.
Yeah–what he said! Fighting the Foucaultian Left and the Falwellian Right in any way I can. I’m also a passionate advocate of Space exploration and have belonged to the Planetary Society for about 20 years.
I’m am passionate about my kids, and the legacy I leave them. I’m certainly passionate about my study of Greek, as it relates to my understanding of the New Testament. I’m passionate about the need for change in the western Christian church (as a whole).
I am passionate about German. The language, the people, the history, the architecture (I love northern German brick Gothic churches more than my life). Living about seven hours away from my favourite city, Lübeck, makes it possible for me to travel there about twice a year, the best few days of the year! Also, studying the language makes it a lot easier to study Latin and Greek, there being a MASSIVE corpus of linguistic literature in German.
Another thing I am passionate about is food. I love to cook, I love to eat, I love to drink a nice bottle of Spanish Rioja to accompany a juicy steak, there’s nothing like spending an hour or two cooking a nice sauce, spending a Sunday cooking a fond for later use etc.
And also, I’m addicted to Danish philology, which unfortunately is very scarcely presented for beginners. There only exist very specialised studies, very difficult to comprehend.
Wine. I’m deeply in love with wine, the feeling of its strong essence upon applying it to your lips, sipping it slowly, aaah. Wine. I should write a poem about it.
Anyway, I have many great passions in my account of consideration. One such consideration would be thinking. I think too much, 98% of it being philosophical arguments between me and I. 1% being sexual desires taking over my braincells upon finding that I can no longer think straight. And the last percent being miscellaneous. I hope to one to achieve supreme enlightenment from over-thinking.
