What are these abbreviations in Kaegi?

I got hold of a used copy of Kaegi’s Advanced Lessons in Greek (1906, English translation by James A. Kleist). Despite the title it’s not very high-level stuff; it seems to be part II of an exercise book keyed to Kaegi’s grammar (which I also have).

My question is about the abbreviations sprinkled around in the English-to-Greek sentences. A sample:

The Athenians gave all citizens a share in the honors (a) and offices.
It is not for the conqueror (pl) to surrender arms (a)!
God has given us tears (a) as (o) a comfort in misfortune (a).
Good parents (a) will lay up a treasure for their children.
After that the erecting of (o) a statue was a disgrace rather than an honor.
Solon formed the Areopagus from the archons who (o) were (o)chosen (o) annually.

I checked the preface to the book and looked in the grammar but I don’t find a word about the abbreviations. Who can solve the puzzle?

I believe the (a) means add the article, the (o) means omit the article. (pl) should be plural. Here’s a list of abbreviations to Kaegi’s excercise book. It’s located just before the vocabulary sections.
