Hi all,
I’ve been reading Latin for quite awhile and always intended to go at Greek as intensively as the former, though for the last couple of years it has receded into the background amidst undergrad work. However, as summer break draws near, and as my research has brought me back into areas where knowledge of Greek is of high priority, I’m ready to take what I’ve already learned and enter into some intensive reading.
Would anyone be interested in a study group for, let’s say, intermediate to advanced-level reading? Rather than approaching the same texts together, I was thinking it would be great to just post whatever we’re working on every few days, be it short texts or fragments of longer ones, giving a summary/translation and some observations. This way we can get a taste of the wider corpus of texts and have discussions while staying focused on whatever we’re doing. A diversity of dialects would also be great for people like me who are basically in the Attic orbit but anticipate approaching the Homeric corpus (perhaps by the end of the year) and eventually everything else.
A quick introduction to where I’m at: I finished H&Q some time ago, and I feel that this has given me the foundation for Attic and future expansion into other dialects. Right now, I’m going working through Book I of Herodotus’ Histories, the Geoffrey Steadman edition; being about halfway through, I’ve adjusted to most of the Ionic differences from Attic. I’m also doing a bit of Koine on the side, working through Koine Greek Reader: Selections from the NT, Septuagint, and Early Christian Writers. This is mostly because of an interest in early Christian theology sparked by some research I’ve been doing. To ground myself more in Attic, I plan to turn my attention to Plato and Attic drama over the summer.
