How would I translate the middle participles of a verb? Lets go with λυομενος. I have a vague recollection of it being “Having ransomed” or “having been ransomed” (in passive), but I’m not sure.
The middle of λυω is a little different than most others, meaning something that’s far removed from it’s original, literal definition.

for example, εγει?εται means “he/she/it awakens” or “arises”. essentially, this is an intransitive construction. the active would be “he/she/it wakes up”, the transitive. the passive is “he/she/it is woken up”.
λυω doesn’t have that sort of regularity. “to ransom” is quite a metaphor or two away from “to loosen oneself” or “to loosen in one’s own interest”, don’t you think?
