Today's silly question: Pronouns with "in loco" (llpsi)

Hello all.

In chapter 20 now (after abandoning the colloquium for 19 - can’t follow it to save my life).

Anyway, talking of the wet-nurse - “…quae ei in loco matris est”.

I understand it, but I just can’t get my head around the pronoun choices. I could just ignore it, but I don’t want to.

I presume both refer to the nurse, as the antecedent for mum comes later.

Can anyone help?

Cheers.

Infans ab alia muliere alitur, quae (= mulier, nominative) ei (= infanti, dative) in loco matris est.

In other words: Nutrix est mulier, quae infantem alit. Nutrix non est mater infantis, sed infanti in loco matris est.

Does this help you?

Thanks. My analytical skills aren’t what they were. If I had simply pulled all the players (subjects) out of that whole sentence and drawn a few lines between them, I expect I’d have seen the sense. Joining pronouns to antecedents would have reminded me that there was a baby in there

There’s an important lesson to be learned here <fx: shoots self in head> Too late.

Where did you have problems with colloquium undevicesimum?

What looked like drunken philosophical/religious ramblings.

I’ll have another look at it maybe tomorrow.

Paul.
