Many say vigiles for police. You may find these pages helpful.
I’ve always assumed that “vigiles” meant the same as “custodes”, and that the knights (“equites”) played the same role in peace (not in the war) as the police today does. Though I haven’t studied a lot of history really.
I might have also been influenced by my fellow anarchists on the Internet refering to police as “armed troop”.
