Syntax needed

None of the Greek syntaxes on this site are completely adequate: I just finished a discussion on the genitive case which was discussed nowhere in any of the books on this site. Textkit needs a book such as Moorhouse’s Syntax of Sophocles which extensively discusses more obscure uses of each case.[/u][/quote]

Hi Vir Litterarum,

I’m all for more sources of the rarity, so thanks for the book suggestion.

What’s your definition of completely adequate? I can’t see how we don’t at least have the ground floor covered when it comes to Greek syntax. Smith and Goodwin seem to fill in the basics.

Other than the book you suggested, what are we missing that’s public domain?

thanks,
jeff

I am not familiar with all of the books available on the public domain, but I feel that tragedy is such an integral part of Greek literature that some of its idiosyncratic usages need to be addressed on this site. I fully concur that this site provides an excellent compilation of materials for referencing much of Classical Greek syntax; however, I think the one area in which it is deficient is Greek tragedy.

hi, copyright means books like moorhouse 1982, fraenkel 1950 &c – the books you need for tragedy – and e.g. chantraine 1958 and 1963 for homer, hamm’s (later voigt’s) 1957 german grammar for sappho &c, can’t go online. hence libraries and abebooks

i’ve begun a summary of the useful points of moorhouse 1982 in here:
