St John Chrysostom - World compared to theater

I am new here, Hello to all of you.

I recently remembered a sentence learned back a few years (20 :confused: ) from a study book.
The sentence is from a text by St John Chrysostom.
Oὕτω καὶ ἐν τῷ βίῳ. That is translated (in the book) “As it is in life / It is like this in Life”. Pardon my French, I am French :wink: and it translated 'Il en est ainsi dans la vie" in French.

Through different research I found online the full text (via google books) and to my surprise the sentence in my study book was not complete. (After reading the Forum chart I prefer not to include the link at this stage). I found it in a book of selected ‘pieces’ from St John Chrysostom by M. Fleury Lécluse.

The full sentence seems to be : Oὕτω καὶ ἐν τῷ βίῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ τέλει.

I was wondering if someone could help me understand the additional bit and full sentence.

τέλος means something like “end”, “culmination”, “outcome”. Others will correct me if I’m wrong, but I think here it means the end of life, i.e. death. Note also καί … καί.

Oὕτω καὶ ἐν τῷ βίῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ τέλει.
“Il en est ainsi aussi bien dans la vie que dans son aboutissement.”
“It is like that both in life and in death.”

(The shorter version should be “Il en est ainsi aussi dans la vie”, otherwise you’ve left καί untranslated!)

As Paul said, I would render it “As in life, so in death”.
