September Machen group??

Is anyone interested in joining or running a September Machen group. Myself and 2 other people from the Greekstudy list http://nxport.com/mailman/listinfo/greekstudy would like to do so. I don’t care where we host it, here or there or even at yahoo.

Is anyone interested?

I’m somewhat interested in joining. Other’s are working on beginning a Mounce group soon. I’ll have to go with the wait and see since I’d rather go through Mounce for now.

Paul Baronowsky is starting a Machen group. Yeah! He posted the details at bgreek and greekstudy. I’m afraid to do a copy and paste in case it’s breaking rules to do so.

Hi everyone,

I would like to know what a machen group is since it’d be good if it is about learning ancient greek!

best

Sid

Sid,

If you click on the link above and register for the e-mail list, you can ask about the different Greek study groups going on there.

I think an Attic group started a few weeks ago using the Athenaze book.

For the Machen book that is in Koine, chapter 3 is due on September 12th. Chapters 1 and 2 on the alphabet and accents are to be studied independently.

Kat

Thanks for your reply,

so how can I get hold of a Machen copy so that I can join your koine group?

I assume these books are the ones.

You can use ANY 1st edition book. The second edition book came out about 2 years ago, so any copyright before that is OK. It’s been published by MANY publishers over the years. They are ALL the same book.

I ordered a photocopy from Still Waters Revival Books in Canada. I paid about $5.00 for it.

There have been a few workbooks and answer keys published for it over the years, too. All the workbooks, studyguides etc are for the 1st edition.

I took a one year Koine Greek course using Machens as the study text, way back in 1981. It really was the best thing I learned in that one year of bible college, which is a tool I still use to this day.

I would love to dive back into greek again with all these tools online now. The thing about studying greek though, I must caution, is that if you do not have a good basic understanding of the conventions and rules in language grammar, you are going to find it tough slugging. So I recommend a refresher course in basic english grammar, i.e. bascis of parts of speech, and function in basic english.

Does anybody know any good english grammar ebooks online one could use as a refresher course? Any help would be appreciated in this department. I think this is the place to really start if you want to get into any depth with greek. Just my two cents on the subject.

By the way this site is amazing… wow so happy I found it.

A nice little book that’s geared a little more towards style than actual mechanics is How to Speak and Write Correctly, by Joseph Devlin. It’s short but has some nice things in it.

There are several grammars listed at Project Gutenberg (you can find them by typing “english grammar” into the title search that appears when you click on Online Catalog) but I haven’t read any of them. They all look to be much older than the Devlin book above, but they may be much more comprehensive.

This is only my second day on Textkit and I stumbled across it purely by accident. I am amazed at the resources available here.

A little introduction for myself. I am a Greek Orthodox chanter and God willing future seminarian at Holy Cross in Boston. I will hopefully be entering in the fall of 2006. I am trying to get a leg up on learning some basic Koine Greek so hopefully I might be able to test out of some Greek courses as I have to learn Koine, Liturgical, and modern Greek.

I tried learning Greek years ago and I still have a copy of Machen’s text as well as Voelz (Lutheran Missouri Synod St. Louis Seminary Greek professor) “Greek Grammar”.

Is there an online answer key to Machen’s text?

Grace and peace,
Reader Chrysostom

Welcome aboard cinci. I don’t know of an online answer key to Machen, although I do have one in hard copy that I obtained from a Greek professor.
If I wasn’t so time-constrained, I could convert it to online. Then again, if someone wants to scan it, I’d be happy to send it.

If you are interested in getting a pre-seminary jump on Greek, why not try Mounce? I began using Machen years ago, and found it to be much rougher sledding than Mounce, especially if you are on your own. Mounce is much more user friendly in my view.
