salve

my name is nathan and i just discovered this forum the other day and it is a god send. i decided to learn latin because of my interest in history, particularly medieval history. right now i enjoy reading popular history dealing with anything midieval and i thought it would be great to go directly to the sources instead of relying on other peoples translations. it seems that most people on this forum are mostly interested in the “golden age” of latin. i was wondering if there were any one else out there who are knowledgeable of the middle ages, if so i was wondering when italian and french emerged in their respective regions? and if it would be advantageous to my midieval studies to also learn french and italian.
i hope to get to know everyone, and i hope my many questions will not bother.

Hello nathan.

Welcome aboard. I would guess that Italian is a few centuries younger than French. Though I don’t know for sure.
I’m interested in Classical Latin as well as Medieval Latin, in particular, Inquisition documents and various canons. That’s my goal with Latin.

a presto,

Hi Nathan! Welcome to Textkit!

Salve Incipis, I hope you meant “Salvete” to address us all

I’m not studying Medieval Latin, but I do find it interesting as a language. Apparently it existed at the same time as early Romance languages and even interacted with them, making it hard to discern when they actually emerged. The great thing about learning Classical Latin is that with it you can understand the later forms relatively easily. The main difference is that later Latin is much more liberal with word formations.

Hello, Incipio, and welcome.

I do mostly Greek, but I think that when I decide to go back to Latin again I might do it with Walthius rather than Caesar.

And if the medieval period is your interest, don’t forget about Old Occitan, the language of the Troubadors!

Salve Incipis!

I ask questions, and each time it has been answered most pleasantly. My problem is not enough time - when I get back on task I’ve forgotten more than I learned (or so it seems).

ave,

Barrius

Hi Incipio and welcome to Textkit! I’m sure that Latin will help a lot with medievil studies if that’s what you’re interested in. I haven’t actually read much from that time period, though what I have read didn’t differ from classical Latin at all as far I could tell.

Hello,

I read this thread a few days ago, and as I was browsing ebay today, I came across an item for sale: Medieval Latin by Harrington, Joseph Pucci (1997). It is not mine, nor do I know who is selling it. However, I thought it may be of interest to incipio or others interested in Midieval Latin, since I don’t see that many books specifically on the subject. Here is the link:

I hope this is ok to post, since we all seem to be book lovers here.
