hi to everyone i’m new here.
within the last couple of years i have been moving toward independent daily classical studies which has brought me here.
right now i see myself as a ping pong ball bouncing around different study paradigms trying to find the right classical niche that will allow me to soar high and look upon whence civilized man sprung forth and ascertain a firm philosophical outlook .
hence, i am now bouncing between Latin and Greek. I am heavily inspired by a Latin centered curriculum that couples a synergistic approach of Latin with Mathematics, so i would like to stay somewhat to that format. finally, i must say one of my driving motives is a personal interest in medieval history and early western european civilization as a whole. (not forgeting North American history of my own grand nation which spawned from European civilization.)
thus my questions :
-
Is it possible to focus on the homeric/koine/attic Greek and yet still absorb and understand much of western europe during the medieval period.
-
is it beneficial or hinderance to focus on ancient Greek and maybe later pick up one or two of the romance languages such as Spanish or French (from an english speakers perspective i ask for it is the only language i know right now)
-
or does… an intergrated study of simutaneous Greek and Latin go well together?
one idea i have about the advantage of concentrating on greek is it seems to me that the magnitude of both Latin and Greek literature are not feasible in ones lifetime. But Latin draws upon Greek culture and also the byzantine culture adopted many ideal of the roman culture but produced greek literature. notwithstanding the one of the great works of christian literature is written in greek therefore Greek would be the best field of study in order to capture a grand birds eye view of the human condition and civilized culture.
any comments? i would greatly appreciate any comments on my thoughts here (hopefully they are somewhat logical).
i’m excited to be a part of this community and hope to be a contributor and give back just a little of the much i’ve gained since reading within this group.
