RA XXXVII - Dative query

RA. XXXVII - lines 12/15.

Eō tempore Euander, Mercuriī et Carmentis filius, profugus ex Arcadiā, regiōne Peloponnēsi mediā, in Italiam vēnit cum parvā manū Graecōrum; cui Faunus, rēx benignus, montem, quem ille posteā Palātium appellāvit, et arva colenda dedit.

I assume “cui” refers back to Euander.

Correct?

Sorry about these dribs and drabs, but I want to make absolutely sure I’m on the right track before moving ahead; wish I had done that with FR.

Yes it is a relative pronoun and refers back to Euander. Do you know why it is dative? I am sure you do but just checking.

Are you doing the Exercitia that accompany Roma Aeterna?I think you will find them helpful.

No need to apologise for asking questions.

Euander is the recipient of Faunus’ gift. What initially confused me was the semi-colon, i.e. I expected the recipient to be in the second half of the sentence - but drew a blank!
Yes, I am doing the RA exercitia, but only after having gone through the lesson and done the Pensa.

Anyway, thanks for confirming.

That is the method which up to now I have used with my students but I am changing my approach. I think its best if the exercitia are done in parallel with the reading and the Pensa once all the exercitia and reading has been done. That way the exercitia supplement the reading and the Pensa bring everything together at the end. This is the method suggested by Ørberg himself.

Try it and see how you get on. It makes sense to me.

Will certainly do that; I’m sure you are right. Thanks for the tip!
