Question from Athenaze Chapter 6

“ο μεν ουν Θησευς εν μεν τη αριστερα εχει το λινον, εν δε τη δεξια το ξιφος, και προχωρει εις τον σκοτον.”

In this sentence, there seems to be the μεν… δε… conjunction, but I don’t get what the other μεν is supposed to be doing. It seems to me that the second μεν is attached to the δε here,and not the first, but I don’t know what the other one left out is doing in this sentence.

The given translation is “Theseus holds the thread in his left hand, and in his right hand the sword, and goes forward into the darkness.”

Good question! IMO, the first one, “μεν ουν” matches this definition from Middle LIddell II.4, under μὲν.
