Put Ancient Greek/Latin old readers in a new format.

Hello!

I am starting a project to put ancient greek readers (for beginners) in a good quality (a searchable document with good image quality). I am using LaTex (XelaTex, because use Unicode) to run the text with font "“KadmosU” (but can be any other). My idea is to establish a “standard” (good quality) version of the readers for everyone who wants to learn. I use the software Keyman to type direct ancient greek (I think that is the best fo ancient greek) [Here: https://help.keyman.com/keyboard/greekclassical/1.0/greekclassical.php ].

Thrasymachus was originally published by Duckworth/Bristol Classical Press but is now owned by Bloomsbury Publishing. I checked with Bloomsbury’s rights department, and while they were kind enough to really look into this and get back to me, they decline to permit either the digitization of the text or the non-commercial reading of it on YouTube.

Thank you very much!! I really was doubt about this subject, but after a search I discovered that in USA CopyRight is for 95 years for the books after 1923 (Before 1923 was another rule, anyway, all are in Public Domain). In EEUU, the CopyRight is for 70 years. The Europeian books (Paoli, especially) is protect for CopyRight, but I downloaded from the school Vivarium Novum, and I did not find the original publisher. The ANAGNOSTIKO the same thing as Paoli, both are from 50’s. So, for educational proposes I think that is OK. All the authors are death and the publisher did not exist more.

Especially about Thrasymachus, is really sad the fact that this very nice course has actually a publisher that do not care about the title. Just a poor reprint from the 70 edition did in 1991, and never more restructured. But ok, let leave Thrasymachus, is from 70, so… we need to wait until 2065 :laughing:
Instead of Thrasymachus, I put Jacobs Greek Reader.

UPDATE: I finished Easy Adaptations from Xenophon - Phillipotts (Here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zmms38gaao2y0eg/Xenophon.pdf?dl=0 ). I divided the texts in sections (according to the book) and in the front of each sections intro “[ ]” are the lines between of the texts sections, because each chapter have a continuous line number. The book also have a “Errata” that I also correct in the main text. Next I will work in Greek Boy at Home - Rouse.

Hi,
I’m new to he forum, so I would like to first say “thank you” for providing all these great resources. To return something, I made a scan of Rouse’s “First Greek boy” and included Rouse’s Greek explanation which I like a lot. As I use(d) it for my self-study, it includes German translations (likely with many mistakes; it is work in progress). In a separate sheet, I included Rouse’s hints incl. translations to English (based on LJ) and German (various sources; for some, I added also French (based on Bailly) and Latin (based on Leopold)).

Someone interested in a clean (electronic) copy, could use it and remove the additions. (btw: as it is a scan of the “archive org” pdf, it matches its layout).

Any comments welcome.

This is a great idea! There are a lot of texts available in print which would be great to read with the aid of tools such as Learning With Text and online dictionaries.

Thank you! Your documents are of high quality and have a lot of interesting complements ! I used the https://ancientgreekocr.org/ for establish the “basic corpus”, (I downloaded the clean version B/W on archive). The final result is in HTML format and worked very well, with a good accuracy :slight_smile:. I have all the greek texts in the list with OCR already done (in HTML format). If you want, I can send it for you! Just write a email to me, or I can put at DropBox too. In the first part of this project, I will work only in the greek text, to put them in a acceptable format (To create the PDF, I use XelaTeX - Latex editor). After it, we can coordinate a work together, as a “companion”: Doing exercises, put forcing vocabulary, and this kind of stuff. But this is a second stage, for now, we need to work in all these greek texts. As we have people from different countries and mother tongues, I do not want to put English as the “official” language. I want that all these material serve to create good resources for classical studies in many language as possible.

Obs: The footnotes of the text, I put in the main text (to do not use the \footnote environment of “Latex”, and disturbing any type of copy of this material) on the format: “text (= footnote )”, for the word which is refereed.

Update: I finished Tales from Herodotus - Farnell and Stories form Herodotus - Phillipotts.
I also made some improvements on the texts, I enlarged the Margins, put a bigger font size and fixed the problem of words that were going outside the margin and the paper. I substituted all the others with the new versions.
