The verb _ **punish** _ came into English from the old French _ **puniss-** _, extended prp. stem of _ **punir** _ (to punish) from the Latine _ **punire** _, from _ **poenire** _ from _ **poena** _, which is related to the Greek _ **ποινή** _ (poene; punishment, penalty).

**From the same root:** _punishment, punishable, punitive, punitory_

**In modern Greek:**
**_ποινή_** : punishment, sentence, penalty
\_
_**ποινή (poene) - poena → poenire → punire → punir → puniss- → punish**_
