Proficiency standards or tests?

Hi all. In a few months I’m coming up my 1 year Greek anniversary since starting to learn the language. Thanks to various circumstances and opportunities (such as the welcoming atmosphere here at Textkit, and covid giving me extra spare time to work on the language daily) I’m fairly happy with my progress and it feels I’m doing pretty well.

Do any of you here know of any resources, tests or similar that can be used to roughly gauge proficiency? As I’m self taught, I really have no idea how I’m doing compared for example if I took university classes.

I have a bunch of long term goals with learning the language, such as reading my favorite authors and so on, but on top of this list I’ve recently added a long term “academic” goal: to be able to pass an entrance exam for a PhD program that requires ancient greek proficiency. I don’t actually know what that entails in practice, but to me it sounds like a nice, ambitious, but not impossible goal. A first step towards that goal would of course be to acquire the same knowledge as an undergraduate in classics.

Pointers appreciated! Thanks.

You could try the ACL’s National Greek Exam. Call or email then and explain your circumstances and goals, and they may allow you to take it. I haven’t used them in quite a while (I no longer teach Greek regularly), but I had good experiences with them when I did, they were courteous and helpful.
