I am reading Rouse’s Latin Stories for Reading or Telling. It includes a story of a Roman boy who is afraid of his own shadow. He tries to escape to Veii to get away from the shadow. Here is an extract:
Itaque coemptō equō Rōmā profectus est Veiōs. Sed accidit ut sōl adversus fulgēret; quō factum est, ut umbram suam nōn vidēret. Cum autem sē revertisset, ut respiceret, ecce umbra nigerrima, longissima, per viam prōtenta. (P. 57).
How is this possible? Veii is almost directly north of Rome. How can he ride north and get the sun in front of him?
