hi again textkit
while browsing lingua Latina a college companion (by j, neumann)page 289(1st conjugation verbs) ,I came across the following problem.
in chapter 16 verse 3, the verb form ‘appellatur’ is used. when I checked this with my online pol (pocket oxford latin dictionary)it gives two forms
- present passive indicative 3 singular
- present passive subjunctive 3 singular
note, appellare is 1st conjugation
also when I tried the form appelletur it also gave two forms
- future passive indicative 3 singular
- present passive subjunctive 3 singular
there is one problem here straight away , appelletur is not third conjugation so its future passive should be appellabitur
what about the two forms for the present passive subjunctive? the first one (appellatur)is incorrect?
if this is so its the first time I ever came across an error in the pol.
looking forward to hear from you.
stay well and healthy.

See https://logeion.uchicago.edu/appello
There are two verbs, one of the 3rd and one of the 1st conjugation:
ap-pello (adp-, Fleck., Halm (in Tac.); app-, Merk., B. and K., Rib., Weissenb., Halm (in Nep.), pŭli, pulsum, 3, v. a. and n., to drive, move or bring a person or thing to or toward.
appello (adp-, Ritschl), āvi, ātum, 1 (subj. perf. appellāssis = appellaveris, Ter. Phorm. 5, 1, 15), orig. v. n., as a secondary form of the preced. (cf.: jungere, jugare), to drive to or toward, to go to in order to accost, make a request, admonish, etc.; like adire, aggredi; hence like these constr. as v. a. with acc., to accost, address, to speak to, call upon (very freq. and class.).
It’s because there are two appello’s identical in the first principal part.
appello, appellare, appellavi, appellatus, (1st conjugation), speak, address, call, call by name
and:
appello, appellere, appuli, appulsum (3rd conjugation), drive, drive toward, et al.
That’s why you are getting those results. So… appellatur can be 3ps indicative pres pass from appello, -are, or 3ps subjunctive pres passive from appello, -ere.
appelletur therefore can be 3ps subjunctive pres pass from appello, -are, or 3ps indicative future pass from appello, -ere.

I will keep that in mind in future in my lingua Latina undertakings.
