My assignment is to make 5 sentences about the story of Daedalus and Icarus. After making the 5 sentences we have to translate them into Latin. I tried doing this on my own, I’m pretty sure I’m mostly wrong, but this is due tomorrow and it’s a major grade… I really don’t want to fail :cries:
Anyway here are the english sentences and how I translated them, I really had no idea on how to translate number 4… please I need help quick, this is due tomorrow morning…
Daedalus and Icarus were stuck on an island.
Daedalus et Icarus in insula manebant
Daedalus made wings so they could get off the island.
Daedalus pennam facet, ut effugerant insula.
Daedalus warns Icarus to not fly too high or too low.
Daedalus monit Icarus non volo celsior, non appior.
Icarus does not listen and falls into the Icarian Sea.
Icarus non audio et [insert word for “falls?] in Icaria aqua.
Daedalus buries Icarus on the island named Icaria.
Daedalus sepelio Icarus in insula vocat Icaria.
Please, I’m begging you guys. Please edit it for me to make it correct or atleast tell me what words to change in the English or Latin to make it correct. My Latin class grade needs this boost…
As you know we are not here to do your homework, but you’ve definitely made a good effort, so i’ll try to help you out a bit and hope the rest of the Forum doesn’t banish me for it! Alternatively, they might laugh at my suggestions of course. I’m only a student with limited experience, so keep that in mind when I make these comments.
Is fine.
Penna really is a feather. Ala, -ae would be better, and mind to make it plural. “Facet” needs to be perfect tense. “Effugerant” should be present subjunctive. (I think!)
“Monit” is not a word, have a look at the declension. “Icarus” should be accusative. I’m not too sure about the rest of the sentence. I think that it should be more along the lines of: D warns I “nec celsior volet nec appior”. I’m even more uncertain about the cases that celsior/appior should be in!!
“Audio” is 1st person, you need 3rd person. “Fall” is cadere. “Aqua” is okay, but look up the word for ‘sea’.
“Sepilio” is the 1st person, use the 3rd. (humo, -are might be a better option by the way). “Icarus” is not the subject, so use accusative. “Vocat” should be passive.
OK, you guys here are the corrections I made… I’m not sure if I messed up kaspers instructions and made more mistakes or followed them properly and fixed them… also i’m not too sure what to do with sentence 4 still:
Daedalus and Icarus were stuck on an island.
Daedalus et Icarus in insula manebant
Daedalus made wings so they could get off the island.
Daedalus alas fecit, ut effugeretur insula.
Daedalus warns Icarus to not fly too high or too low.
Daedalus monet Icare non volo celsior, non appior.
Icarus does not listen and falls into the Icarian Sea.
Icarus non audit et cadet in Icaria mare.
Daedalus buries Icarus on the island named Icaria.
Daedalus humat Icare in insula vocatur Icaria.
Constructive feedback greatly appreciated. Please, quickly though I have to go to sleep soon and this is due in the morning. I may have to check this site early tomorrow morning to see what replies I have…
