I’ve been following the thread “Mea culpa” in the Latin forum, and have been paticularly intrigued by the discussion of how and whether people translate in their head while reading Latin.
I’ve mostly tried to avoid translation from the beginning (mainly because I strongly dislike translation), so I generally don’t translate in my head while reading Greek. I did do all the Greek-English excercises in Pharr though. I used to translate in my head if I came across a paticularly tricky passage. Now, I do a mental martha on really difficult passages (I’m considering starting a martha thread in the open board some time in the near future, so hopefully you all will know what I mean by a “mental martha” soon). I only translate individual words, usually nouns for some reason, in my head if it’s a vocabulary word I barely know.
I got most of my basic Greek education through Pharr, though I did go through about 20 lessons of White’s First Greek Book too. I’m wondering how prevalent translating while reading is among the Greek learners, and which textbooks (if any) promote it more heavily than others.
