ollendorff vocab – the cruel husband and the thief

This story uses only the vocabulary introduced in the Greek Ollendorff up to page 190 with the sole exception that γυνή does not appear until page 220. It also keeps to grammar introduced up to that point.
(Warning: the world of this story is a lot less peaceful than that found in the pages of the Ollendorff.)

ἔμπορος τις οὐ ἐφίλει τὴν γυναῖκα. ὁ ἔμπορος εἶχε θυγατέρα διὰ τῆς γυναικός ἀλλά οὐ εἶχε υἱόν. διὰ τοῦτο οὐ ἐφίλει τὴν γυναῖκα. πολλάκις ἔπινε οἶνον καὶ ἔπαισε τὴν γυναῖκα.
«οὐ ἀποφευξόμεθα;» ἔλεξε ἠ κόρη τῇ μητρί.
«μενοῦμεν καὶ ἐδόμεθα» ἔλεξε ἠ μητέρ.
ὁ ἔμπορος εἶχε χηλόν καὶ ἐν χηλῷ ἔκειτο χρυσόν.
κλέπτης τις εἰσῆλθεν ἀλλὰ ὁ ἔμπορος ἤκουε. ὁ ἔμπορος ἔδραμε ἐπὶ τὸν χηλόν. οὐ εἴδε τὸν χρυσόν. ἔδραμε εἰς στοάν. ὁ κλέπτης ἔφυγε καὶ ὁ ἔμπορος αὐτόν ἤκουε ἀλλὰ διὰ σκιὰν οὐκ εἶδέν. ὁ ἔμπορος ἐδίωκε τὸν κλέπτην. ἔδραμε διὰ κήπου. ἔδραμε διὰ κώμης. ἔδραμε εἰς ὕλην. ὁ τοῦ κλέπτης πούς ἔπαισεν ῥίζαν καὶ ὁ κλέπτης ἔπεσε καὶ ὁ ἔμπορος ἔλαβε τὴν κλέπτην.
«ποῦ ἐστι τὸν χρυσόν;» ἔλεξε ὁ ἔμπορος.
«οὐκ ἔχω χρυσόν» ἔλεξε ὁ κλέπτης καὶ ὁ ἔμπορος ἔτυψε τὸν κλέπτην.
«ποῦ ἐστι τὸν χρυσόν;»
«οὐκ ἔχω χρυσόν» ἔλεξε ὁ κλέπτης καὶ ὁ ἔμπορος ἔσχισε τὸν κλέπτην ἀλλὰ ὁ ἔμπορος οὐκ ηὗρε τὸν χρυσόν.

μετὰ τοῦτο ἡ γυνὴ ἔλεξε ἐμπόρῳ «οὐκέτι μενοῦμεν»
«σχήσω ἄλλην γυναῖκα καὶ σχήσω υἱόν.» ἔλεξε ὁ ἔμπορος.
ἡ μητὴρ καὶ ἡ θυγάτηρ ἐλθόν ἐκ τῆς τοῦ ἐμποροῦ οἰκίας καὶ ἡ μητὴρ εἶχε κάνεον.
ἐν το κάνεον ἦν τὸν χρυσόν.

ὁ μῦθος δηλοῖ ὅτι ὁ σοφὸς δύναται ἐξ ἀδικίας τὸ δίκαιον φέρειν.

Good story. I like it but I did have some problems listed below. If I am wrong, please correct me. Keep writing.

τις after κλέπτης?

ἔμπορος ἔδραμε ἐπὶ οὗ ἦν τὸν χηλόν.

οὗ is not found in Ollendorff if it means “where”. If it is a relative pronoun, οὗ
begins on page 209 of the book which you forgot to mention.
Needs a definite article before ἔμπορος.

ἔσχον in both places I think should be future tenses, not aorist tenses.

ὁ ἔμπορος ἔσχισε τὸν κλέπτην - The merchant split the thief? If that is what you meant, nevermind me then.

Thanks for your corrections and I have made the appropriate changes.

Quite so and indeed it should work if I remove οὗ ἦν thought perhaps παρα would work better.

I did mean cleave. I would have said the merchant had an ax but ax appears in Ollendorf some 50 pages later.
